Jewelers want to help you, they want you to buy from them. Most are very friendly and are naturally upbeat. When buying expensive Jewelry remember that most can discount, to what extent, if at all, is the question. Courtesy goes a long way, when going into the buying process you need to know about diamonds, but never ever go into a jewelry store thinking you know more than the jeweler, no matter how much reading you have it can not compare to years of knowledge and experience, let them explain to you any details you are not clear about. But if you feel they are just trying to push a sale rather than help you find what you really want THEN TURN THE OTHER WAY AND RUN. Their first priortiy should be helping you and fulfill your needs, not just try to upsale you, if you know you only want this but they keep pushing that, then you should probably find a new Jeweler.
Not all items are eligible for discounts so dont expect it for everything, if you are buying a $200 item asking for another discount is insulting to a certain point. remember that jewelry has value and it is not for everyone if you can only afford a $100 piece then it is better that you do not buy jewelry at all.
First off, find what you like, dont look at price so much, after you find what you like THEN talk about price. If you are buying at a large retailer then remember that to the jeweler time is money, dont waste their time, because in the end you will not get as big a discount as you want, if you get one at all. After you find something you really like and want to purchase ask if there are any specials at the moment, if they respond No then explain to them that you are very interested in buying the piece but it is a little more than you have to spend, if they do not respond with an offer then make one, if an item is $3000 then ask them if they could sell it for $2400. usually the starting point for negotiations is around 20% so dont low ball them but dont let them sell you something for more than its worth.

I have been asked this many times, "what is the difference between the retail chains and the mom and pop stores" well there is a difference and choosing between the two depends on your needs. Jewelry at the chains are mass produced, which means most of the peices where put together by a machine and formed in mass templates. If you work with a private Jeweler most likely the peice you select was either hand made or detailed carefully by a Jeweler. also many chains do not have a jeweler in the back, the private jewelers do. which means if you need a ring sized in 2 days the chain retailer probably cant do it, but the private can usually do it then and in front of you.

In recent years the market for Diamond simulates and synthetics has become a popular option. but remember that nothing outshines a diamond. synthetics and simulates only devalue the most valuable of all natural elements. The diamond industry suffers from the purchase of these fake diamonds, and the prices reflect this. If you cannot purchase a big diamond engagement ring then do not resort to fakes. buy within your budget by compromising on size. Moissanite is overpriced and looks doubled under a loupe its easy to spot for the trained eye, CZ is only glorified glass and Grossly overpriced and will never measure up to the diamonds brilliance and toughness. Buying these fakes are cheap and look even cheaper. Do not be fooled into buying these it is much better to spend that money on a smaller diamond than to waste it on a fake.

Hi - I will understand if you don't want to answer this question but I have an engagement ring from a failed marriage and I don't want it anymore. I don't want to sell it privately because I don't want to make myself a target for thieves so can you tell me how I can sell it? thanks
sure, you can take it to most private jewelers who can do one of two things. they can buy your jewelry outright or consign it to be sold in their store. you get more money for the consignment because you will get a portion of retail price rather than wholesale value but it takes longer and you dont know if it will sell at all. pawn shops will buy it, but, their prices are the lowest.
if you wish to sell it privately you can email me a picture and the grade of the stones along with the karat of gold and i can give you a round-about price so you wouldnt be ripped of by theives.
